line art in black and white and color

What I want you to know or do:

  • Illustrate the meaning of the art element line, by using a variety of lines
  • Use pattern in your composition
  • Use the entire space
  • Create a center of interest

Questions:

  • What is a line?
  • How do you create emphasis in a work of art?

Here is an example of what the assignment might look like. You should create your own, original artwork.

The assignment is to illustrate the meaning of the art element line by using a variety of lines. When you color in this assignment, you should also use warm (red, yellow, orange) and cool (blue, green, purple) colors to make some parts of the picture appear to come forward and make some parts appear to go back or recede in space.

Sketch your design lightly. Then we will add color or finish up in black and white, pen and ink.

For your color portion of this assignment, use 2 complementary colors. They are colors that are directly opposite one another on the color wheel.

So, use...........

Yellow and violet
Red and green
or Blue and orange

You can mix the two colors together as well

Step 1: Pick 2 colored pencils

Step 2: On the back of your artwork, make 3 small color patches. One is the darker color. Press hard. The other is the lighter color. Press hard. The other is both colors mixed together. The other is the lighter color first (press hard), and the darker color over it (press lightly) .
