2012 midterm exam review

Art 1
2012 midterm exam review

Artwork: A work of art, artwork, art piece, or art object is an aesthetic item or artistic creation. The term "a work of art" can apply to:
an example of fine art, such as a painting or sculpture
a fine work of architecture or landscape design
a photograph, film or visual computer program
a work of conceptual art or performance art
a production of live performance, such as theater, ballet or opera
 an interactive game

Still life: A  work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on).

Line: a line is a path left by a moving point

Shape: a two dimensional area with identifiable boundaries.
Geometric shapes: mechanically drawn lines, squares, rectangles, circles.
Organic shapes: shapes based on forms of nature, which are usually rounded, irregular and curving.

Emphasis is given to an area within the design because that area is meant to be seen or is more important to be noticed when compared to other places of the design. Emphasis creates a center of interest.

Pattern: Two-dimensional decorative visual repetition. Motif is a unit that is repeated in visual rhythm (suggest movement through repetition). Units in a motif may or may not be an exact duplicate of the first unit.

Composition: The act of organizing the elements of an artwork into a harmoniously unified whole.

Artwork that is created by indigenous people or original inhabitants is called aboriginal.
The Australian aboriginal culture is well known of its aboriginal art.

Characteristics of aboriginal art
1. Lines and shapes are repeated over and over in this art.
2. Pattern is an important design principle in this type of art.
3. Repeated dots are often used and repeated in this artwork.
4. This artwork could be characterized as "tribal".

.

The process of art criticism includes:
Describing
Analyzing
Interpreting

In LAW 2, we looked at historical events that had an effect on artwork in the 60’s. Some of these events were World War II, the atomic bomb, television, Rock and Roll music, Disneyland opens in California, the Barbie doll debuts, the Vietnam War, Neil Armstrong becomes the first man to land on the moon.

One art movement that was influenced by these historical events is called Pop art

The Mexican painter whose art we studied in LAW 7 was Frida Kahlo.
Her type of artwork is called Surrealism.

In LAW 6, we studied a painting by Picasso. This painting was titled “Guernica” and depicted the horrors of war.

Be able to:
Create a simple drawing that shows: a variety of lines, shapes (geometric and organic), pattern, a strong center of interest created by using emphasis.

Create a drawing that shows crosshatching and stippling.

Create a drawing the illustrates aboriginal art.

how your grade is determined

How your grade is determined

Nine-week grades are determined by the following categories and percentages:

Grading scale
A 100-93
B 92-85
C 84-77
D 76-70
F 69 and below

Grading
How your grade is determined

Nine-week grades are determined by the following categories and percentages:
Homework 10%
Formative grades 0%
Summative grades 90%

Daily classwork: Many assignments are graded on satisfactory completion of the daily assignment. Daily classwork assignments are due on the day they are assigned. A 0 will be recorded if the daily assignment is not done. Daily assignments may only be made up for excused absences.

Projects: Assignments for projects usually contain criteria and problem solving content encompassing the entire range of cognitive abilities. The student will exhibit knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation in almost all assignments completed for a grade. Evaluation is determined by the proper execution of criteria contained in each assignment (Were all the specifications & conditions accurately met? Are minimum standards and competencies exhibited? Is the work professionally prepared and presented? etc.). Projects usually take more than one class period and count more than daily assignments. Projects are due on the due date. If project work is late and must be made up, the makeup period may be extended to 2 class periods for a maximum grade of 80. A 0 will be recorded if assignments are not completed.

I utilize rubrics, score sheets and checklists to determine the numeric grade for most projects.

Definitions
Homework: The purpose of homework is to help reinforce what was taught in class. Sometimes its purpose is to gather extra information beyond what was taught in class
Formative assessment: The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. Formative assessments are generally low stakes, which means that they have low or no point value.

Summative assessment: The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value.

monochromatic art

Assignment: Create a piece of art that uses a monochromatic color scheme.

Your artwork should:
1. Have at least 10 shapes.
2. Show 10 value steps.
3. Use both geometric and organic shapes.
4. Have a strong center of interest. Make one shape larger than the others.

Vocabulary

Monochromatic: Art made up of only one color, plus tints and shades.

Value: the lightness or darkness of a color.
Tint is adding white to color to create lighter values such as light blue or pink.

texture collage_self grade

Put your name at the top of your paper.

Write Texture Collage below your name.

Rate your texture collage on the following criteria.

Rate each category from 5 to 0, with 5 being the highest score and 0 being the lowest.

1. Collage illustrates texture. The way the surface of an object feels to the touch.

This is called actual texture. Actual texture may be rough, smooth, grainy, slick, gritty, etc.

Artists also create simulated texture. You can see these textures and imagine how they would feel, but if you touch them they only feel like the surface on which they've been drawn, painted, or printed.

2. Collage shows or uses crosshatching, stippling, rubbings and magazine photos.

3. Effort and craftsmanship

4. Collage has a center of interest

ACT words are due each week. Your grade will be a zero if you do not turn the ACT words in when they are due. You cannot makeup ACT words unless you have an excused absence.

If you are in the Art, Design and Communications (ADC) academy, you will submit your ACT word assignment through Edmodo, using your laptop. All ADC academy students must submit this assignment on line, using Edmodo. If you are in the ADC academy and you do not submit through Edmodo, your grade will be a zero.

If you are not in the ADC academy, you may submit this assignment on paper. You are encouraged to submit the assignment online as well. You could work with someone who has a laptop, or you could use another computer to submit the ACT words assignment through Edmodo.

Late work, if it is accepted, will be given a grade of 75% of what the original score would have been. If your grade would have been 100 if you turned it in on time, your late grade will be 75.

Cell phones, portable music players, headphones, earbuds, and other electronic devices are not permitted.
The only exception is your school-issued laptop & ear buds, I believe. That means if you are using your school-issued laptop and ear buds for assigned work, this is permitted....at this point in time. This could change if my understanding is incorrect.

Please bring a pencil to class. I cannot "loan" pencils. I'm just about out. You can also donate pencils.

Timesheets
For now, we are no longer keeping timesheets. We may continue Timesheets later. Instead of Timesheets, I will give you a daily employability skills grade based on what you do in class. Here is a link to how that grade is determined.

ACT words
We will still do ACT words at the beginning of class, but there are changes.

Electronic devices
Cell phones, portable music players, headphones, earbuds, and other electronic devices are not permitted. This is a school rule.

If I see one of those items, I will ask you to give it to me.

If you give it to me, I will give it back to you at the end of class.

If you choose not to give it to me, or contiunue to break this rule, I will write a referral.

The only exception is your school-issued laptop & ear buds, I believe. That means if you are using your school-issued laptop and ear buds for assigned work, this is permitted....at this point in time. This could change if my understanding is incorrect.

Regarding laptops, there are two things you should be doing in this class.
One is working on your assignments. The other is working in your sketchbook.

If you are using your laptop, you should be using it for one of those things. If you are not, you should put away your laptop.

Please bring a pencil to class. I cannot "loan" pencils. I'm just about out. You can also donate pencils.
